The Maurizio Cattelan exhibition at the Guggenheim was amazing, I highly recommend it to anyone who is the least bit curious, it's only open till 1-21 so get over there quick.Theres an interesting interview with the artist in the current brooklyn rail, an excerpt appears below, you can read the entire interview here We’re at a moment when you go out and see 20 shows and notice a trend—low key, lo-fi. You go out and you see 50 shows and you can be sure you won’t remember a single image. You remember moods. What is happening right now is everything is related to the past. I think whatever happened in the past 100 years is the main subject of today. We are in-between generations; it’s a borderline passage. It’s like if you lose your long-term boyfriend, and before you get to the new one you rebound, experiment. You never know where the new relationship comes from. But in the meantime you need to move some things around; it’s very important to see the past.

I take this as another way to say that the things we most regret are what we didn't do rather than what we did do. I've been helping out at the New Museum these last few weeks of the Carsten Holler exhibition where the centerpiece is a long tubular slide that goes from the 4th to the 2nd floor. It's a little scary but a lot of fun and I ride it at least once a day, but I get a lot of people who change their minds or are having doubts about riding it and they ask me what it's like and I think about those phrases above and try to encourage people to let go and ride it. Letting yourself go rather than being ruled by fear is definately the way to go, it's how we develop our sense of who we are. I read an interesting article on the subject here

I kind of loved this movie for a lot of reasons. It started out very confusing and just got more so. It took a while but at a certain point I realized my confusion was a result of the filmaker's subtlety. I lot of very complicated, emotional information was communicated with a kind of visual shorthand, as in the scene where the character played by Benedict Cumberbatch (above), an intelligence agent , is told that from now on everything he's doing will be monitered. He immediatly goes home and kicks out his gay lover, with no explanation and much to the lover's confusion. It's heartbreakingly sad, and I was reminded that this kind of heartbreak was commonplace back in the dark ages. This kind of second class citizinship for gay people was a given and the gay guys actions here (denying himself a relationship) just reinforced society's homophobia. The guys acceptance of the fact that he couldn't have a lover was probably the result of some kind of shame he felt about himself, creating a vicious circle of repression, acceptance and shame. This film was incredibly evocative of places and times that no longer exist. Although the Budapest of the 70's looked a lot like the Budapest I saw a few years ago. And the Istanbul of the '70s did look a lot like the Istanbul I saw in the '80's, I have a feeling that Istanbul is quite different there these days. I would love to find out soon, that was one of the coolest places I've ever been to.

I'm working on an art project that starts with meeting guys on the internet for a hookup. So I've been pretty active on these hookup sites and every once in a while I've been encountering these haters, guys who have seen my postings and accusing me of being a slut...or worse. Of course the fact that they are there encountering every post I've put up would imply that they are spending quite a bit of time there themselves, so who's the bigger slut? But actually the whole notion of strangers monitering my activity and coming to conclusions about my moral makeup is astounding, part of what makes this project so interesting really...all this gay on gay hatred, is it really just self loathing? Jealousey?.. I had one guy commenting on my posts for over a year...here's an example....Whoa, DaddyWhole new photo shoot, but was this taken 20 years ago, when U were a virgin?and my response to him.....Hey, I've been getting these mails from you and I have to ask....why? They kind of feel like harrasment.I'm single now and I'm hooking up a lot...big deal...It's nothing to be ashamed of...It's always, safe, sane and consensual. I'm very honest and upfront and I send a potential partner a very clear face shot and ask the same of them, so I'm not doing anything that's bad for my Karma, no one's getting hurt, It's usually pretty enjoyable for both parties.Are you seeing too many postings from me? Just ignore them, like everyone else who's not interested....obviously they're not intended for you. Craigslist has a built in 5 posting a day limit so there's no need for you to appoint yourself a cop and harrass me. But the saddest and weirdest part is that I'm being harrased by another gay guy for what? Liking sex? Being gay? adapting to growing older by labeling myself a daddy?As a 40 something gay guy, I've lived an entire lifetime of harassment, from my dad who beat me and bullied me for being a sissy, the kids in high school who harrassed me for being different, students in college, employers and coworkers...It's taken me years of therapy to come close to getting over that shit, of learning to accept my self and dare say even love myself for who I am. I'm finally starting to feel good about myself and really enjoying having sex with other men. Then you come along and start harrassing me, critiquing my pics and posts...why?? Why is another gay man harrassing me for trying to enjoy my life and have some fun recreational sex?You have got to be a stone-cold evil bastard to send these mean and hateful emails...and dude...you are wasting a hell of a lot of time and creating some seriously bad karma for yourself...but what comes around goes around, the only thing you are doing is stirring up more bad karma for yourself...but please, no more emails from you. They are unwanted and very sad.I hope you can find another way to get what you want and I seriously wish you, best of luck.He sent me a brief email saying sorry and that he'd stop, and he did. The thing is, I may put up a few posts a day, but that dosn't mean I'm meeting someone for every post I put up... far from it. Many of the responses are a few words, or a vague blurry picture. Or I'll get a flurry of enthusiastic emails setting up a meeting then....gone, the person disappears, never to be heard from again. I can post 5 times a day, for seven days in a row and still not meet anyone.It's all interesting, and a little sad but I have met some incredible guys. People who I've been so glad to have in my life, even if it's just for an afternoon. But most of all, I've learned a lot about myself. Any artist's art is first and foremost about the maker and this project is no exception.I've always been interested in myself alongside others, the way different people bring out different parts of me.And it is fun, too. But truth be told, it's a little exhausting and emotionally draining.It's turning into a really good art piece but I'll be glad when it's done. The variety is interesting and frankly, as a middle aged gay guy, I never thought I'd be able to meet so many handsome, sexy, desirable guys, I'm glad I photograph well. But truth be told, I was in a monogamous relationship for over a year and I really liked it. I would gladly trade all this variety for one person I could trust an confide in and build something deeper with, but right now I don't have a person like that in my life so I'm adapting to where I'm at and going with it.

Republican Mitt Romney probably didn’t know what hit him in a Manchester diner on Monday when he tucked into a booth to make small talk with an older man wearing a “Vietnam Vet” baseball cap.

Romney has been vocal in opposing cuts to U.S. military spending, and chatting up a veteran would seem like an easy warm-up to a day on the campaign trail.

But military spending wasn’t on the mind of Bob Garon, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Garon is gay, and a newlywed. He was eating at the Chez Vachon diner, as he does most days, with his husband, Bob Lemire, 73. The couple — whom friends sometimes call ‘Bob One’ and ‘Bob Two’ — married in June after 15 years together.

Same sex marriage became legal in New Hampshire in 2010, but the state’s Republican-controlled legislature has moved toward repealing the law.

When Romney sat down next to Garon, the Epson resident asked him, “If two men get married, apparently a veteran’s spouse would not be entitled to any burial benefits or medical benefits or anything that the serviceman has devoted his time and effort to his country, and you just don’t support equality in terms of same-sex marriage?”

Romney reiterated his support for the Defense of Marriage Act. “And we apparently disagree,” he added.

“It’s good to know how you feel,” Garon said. “That you do not believe that everyone is entitled to their constitutional rights.”

After more sparring Romney was whisked away for a television interview, leaving Garon to hold court.

“We got married here, where it’s legal. Unless Mitt Romney gets elected,” Garon told reporters. “I don’t think his beliefs should dictate our Constitution. It’s not his choice, it’s my choice.”

“I went and fought for my country and I think my spouse should be entitled to the same [benefits] as they would if I were married to a woman,” he said. “What the hell is the difference?”

Garon told reporters he thought Romney would fail on his quest for the White House. “The guy ain’t going to make it,” Garon said of Romney. “You can’t trust him. I just saw it in his eyes.”

“At least Obama will entertain the idea [of gay marriage],” said Garon. “This man is ‘No way, Jose.’ Well, take that, ‘No way, Jose’ back to Massachusetts.”

Garon’s military service came decades before the 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, which prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual service members, but barred openly gay, lesbian or bisexual persons from military service. The law was ended by President Barack Obama in September 2011, allowing gays to serve openly in the U.S. military.

Carsten Holler's Psycho Tank

Last week i got to spend an hour or so floating around in 18 cm of salted water in this installation by the artist Carsten Holler. It was kind of amazing. Me and my friend Rick got naked, showered and entered. Then Carsten's official photographer Attilio Maranzano set up his camera and snapped away. At first it didn't seem deep enough, I was touching the bottom in some parts, then the current of the pump started to move me along, but my lighter friend, Rick was really moving. I was trying to avoid him when I'd bump into him or he'd bump into me but after a while I just stopped caring, it really didn't matter and that was part of the experience. After a while we were joined by 2 female friends of the photographer's assistant, 2 naked, female strangers joined us and we were all floating and moving around the tank, I was floating much better as the two additional bodies raised the water level. I closed my eyes and felt nothing but the occasional big toe against my head or leg rubbing against my side. When I'd open my eyes I became aware that I was actually moving along quite quickly. The whole experience was supremely relaxing and when I came home I ate then took a 4 hour nap....nice!

The music that I associate with 9-11 is "I am a photograph" by Amanda Lear. I'm an artist and I make visual art about ethereal experiences, often about the experience of listening to music. In the spring of 2001 I was asked to be in a group show in Belgium called "Not A Lear" I was asked to submit a piece that in some way referenced the Euro-disco celebrity Amanda Lear. That was easy, since she was the cover star of The Second Roxy Music album "For Your Pleasure" and Roxy Music was my favorite band. Then the show traveled to the U.S. for a stop at Gracie Mansion Gallery, my piece , however was broken in transit so I was asked to submit a new piece for the NYC version of the show, opening on September 11 2001. The curator Jimi Dams and I agreed on a painting of a movie marquee with a Roxy Music song title on it which I was to deliver in the late morning of september 11. After the events of that morning I forgot about my commitment to bring the painting by and got a call at 1 pm from the gallery's director Sir Rodney Sir asking where was with the painting.....I was shocked as I didn't think the show would go on and open that night but Sir Rodney insisted it would so I got on my bike, put the painting under my arm and rode up to chelsea. I passed through the smokey west village and saw the office workers leaving on foot, walking away from ground zero and I got to chelsea and delivered the painting. Sir Rodney asked me to stay for the opening, I said I wasn't really in the mood but I might stop back later, Rodney said "Please return, Amanda's coming" . So I went home, cleaned up and headed back up to chelsea. By the time I got there, 7:45, there was no-one there but Sir Rodney, Amanda had come and gone and I was the only other person that showed up. I had a martini then left. Now everytime I think of 9-11 I think of Amanda Lear so I'm working on a piece to commemorate that ethereal experience based on Amanda Lear's "I am a photograph".

Patricia Anne Cronin and Deborah Anne Kass, both artists, are to be married Sunday at the Marriage Bureau in Manhattan.

Ms. Cronin (right), 48, is an artist whose work is in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, and was shown in 2009 at the Brooklyn Museum.

Ms. Cronin is also a professor of art at Brooklyn College. She graduated from Rhode Island College and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Brooklyn College. She did additional study at the Yale Summer School of Art and Music and the Skowhegan School of Art. She is a director of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, an organization in Manhattan that provides residencies in Umbertide, Italy, for artists, writers and musicians.

She is a daughter of Anne Belluche Cronin of North Providence, R.I., and the late John W. Cronin. Her mother retired as a third-grade teacher at St. Augustine School, a parochial elementary and middle school in Providence, R.I. Her father was the procurement officer for the Narragansett Bay Commission, which provides wastewater treatment in Providence.

Ms. Kass, 59, is represented by the Paul Kasmin Gallery and by Vincent Fremont in Manhattan, and her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Jewish Museum, all in Manhattan. She is also a senior critic in the Master of Fine Arts Painting Program at Yale.

Ms. Kass is a fellow of the Cue Art Foundation, a Manhattan organization that shows the work of under-recognized visual artists and also provides professional development and education. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University.

She is a daughter of the late Selma Kaufax Kass Silverman and the late Dr. Saul Kass, who lived in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Her father was a dentist in private practice in Wyandanch, N.Y. Her mother was a substitute teacher in the Rockville Centre public schools.

I was in bed last night at 9:30, exhausted from the previous night's Gay Pride week revelry and I got a text from one of my nieces at 10:30 saying "This was a great day for America" thenm when I woke up this morning there was an email from my brother saying he was looking forward to having a new brother in law as is my Mom...and sure I'm joking in the headline there, I love me some borscht belt humour, but actually I gotta say there has been all this outpouring of love towards me from my family. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with my mom last week where she was telling me all about how much my dad loved me. This was prompted by me relating to my mom that I never saw my parents really liking each other and all I remember from my dad was disapproval and criticism of my choice to move to New York and be an artist...and now my nieces, my brother, my mom, all these people telling me how much they love me...it's awesome!

For a long time I didn't much care for my family, I really didn't want too much family in my life and I didn't share much with them out of a fear that they would disapprove, but I find that more I open up to them, the more they welcome me with open arms, it took a long time to get to this spot and, yeah I wish I had gotten here sooner, but everything happens as it is meant to happen, I truly believe that.

It's a gorgeous night in the lower east side. The tourist hipsters are out in full force, puffing away in front of Max Fish so they can say they did before it closes, and more power to them. This amazing, iconic city of dreams is like a movie set where you can reinvent yourself. Last night I attended a low key but chic book signing reception in the west village with my friend Vince and had the most amazing dinner at the revamped "Fedora". Tonight I'm enjoying a delicious steak salad at home with the windows open and listening to the completely downloaded Gaga album and lovin' it.

Lady Gaga, if you really care about your fans like you said you did when I saw you at MSG this past March, DEMAND that amazon get their glitches fixed. I bought the album yesterday for 99c, helping to propel you to number 1. However Amazon is unable to complete the download, the 4 songs I have sound great but amazon is not answering my or your many other fan's emails and I am not able to download the other songs I paid for. I'm pissed off! I'm gonna have to take a Bikram class at LES Bikram . Hey, maybe we used to be neighbors?

Coming Out

There"s a fascinating series in the NY Times called "Coming Out" You can see it here. it's pretty amazing when a mainstream newspaper decides to cover this story. It seems like we are getting closer and closer to the tipping point where discriminating against someone because of their sexual orientation will be thought of as generally unacceptable and acceptance of gay marriage will be inevitable. It's great to see that my gay friends in the military have removed the bars from their eyes in their online pics and that my friend who served in the Marines for 6 years and was discharged dishonorably can be reinstated and discharged honorably. I've seen a lot of change in my lifetime and this one is pretty cool.

I had an awesome, only In New York kind of Day. It began with a Bikram Yoga class in chelsea with my friend Cheryl Donegan. From there we met Alix Perlstein in line at the amazing Comme Des Garcon's Archive sale at the croation church on 41st st. I said hi to the doorman from the NYC store as he walked by us on the line and he pulled us from the line and whisked us inside. It was like a museum show only you could try everything on and it was all for sale. They handed us a ginormous bag as we entered, over the course of a couple of hours I filled it with about 40 items and had to do some serious editing, luckily my opinianated friends Mark and AA were only too glad to help. For a little over $200.00 I got....a Junya Watanbe tee shirt with military logos from 2003, some insanely short, black Junya Watanabe shorts from 2002, 2 pair of crazy acrylic socks, a natural, untanned leather belt, a Fred Perry polo shirt colab, and, taa daa..., A shirt that I had fallen in love with in 2002. It's a plain white short sleeve cotton shirt covered in an industrial grey polyurethane, hard to explain why I love this so much but when I saw it today I had to have it and I could!

Going through this with Mark and AA we were often saying "I remember that"! and it's amazing how many clothing ideas that are very common these days I first saw in this line many moons ago. The sale is on till monday and there's more info here...

Here's Robert Morse singing "I believe In You" from the film version of "How To Suceed In Business Without Really Trying" a 1961 broadway musical. I'm pretty familiar with this because in high school we put on a production of it, great story, great songs and all around, pretty awesome. It's the kind of show that Don and Betty Draper probably would have seen on broadway. It's very much of it's time, it's about a guy who quickly advances up the corporate ladder, through charm, good luck and chutzpah finding his metier in advertising. This guy Robert Morse, who originated the role on broadway, then starred in the film version of "How To Suceed..." is still employed as an actor, he's now playing Bert Cooper on Madmen.

Still with me? good! I just saw the broadway revival of this musical starring Daniel Radcliffe, it reminded me of my years as a presentation producer at DDB.

I guess I expected a (virtual) parade or a banner or something but nope, nuthin....just a promo clip for the angry birds/rio tie-in. This is the first video game I've developed any kind of loyalty or affection towards and as I've said to myself all along, it's just like life. So, no biggie... I'm not gonna let it bug me, I just moved on and bought the next level "Angry Bird's Seasons", Yay!

It's incredible how much this woman meant to me..her simple but powerful message was that it was OK to be different because everyone is special. Usually people die when they are meant to and I imagine her best work was behind her, it's just that this work she did spoke to all these intelligent misfits like myself in a brash, direct arty and unarty way that has never been duplicated.

I had to get some tests done at the hospital this week and frankly I hadn't really read all the info to prepare. One of the requirements was to have an escort pick you up after the testing and I hadn't arranged for that, but when I was at the hospital there were signs all over stating that it was mandatory etc...so I called my friend Vince who lives a couple of blocks away and he said sure he'd pick me up and and that I should come to his place after and look at magazines and rest. Vince is a magazine collector, every possible magazine you would want to see was there at my fingertips, it was heaven and another reminder of what a lucky guy I am.

I love it when someone does something completely unplanned like this and it snowballs.

A New York gay actor and model dodged jury duty this month by saying he could not be impartial because he is treated as a second-class citizen.

Jonathan D Lovitz, was waiting to be called in with other jurors when they were asked whether they could be impartial.

He wrote on his Facebook page: “I raised my hand and said, ‘Since I can’t get married or adopt a child in the state of New York, I can’t possibly be an impartial judge of a citizen when I am considered a second class one in the eyes of this justice system.”

I saw 2 cool exhibitions in uptown galleries over the weekend. For the malevich exhibition at Gagosian there's a David Smith out on the terrace and it was great to go out there, I'd never been in that space before. The Marjorie Strider exhibit included all these paintings of flowers and vegetables that I was completely unfamiliar with.

I love it when a guy that's this hot is smart too...

What made me the most angry about Bill Clinton’s time in office was not his decision to frolic with a woman other than his wife but his decision to act like a Republican. NAFTA and the Telecommunications Act are but two examples of Clinton doing Reaganesque damage to America. Another was the passing of the Defense of Marriage Act, in 1996, which “protects” states from having to recognize any same-sex marriages imported from Hawaii or Massachusetts.

I thought Clinton was too cool and too smart for such homophobic ignorance, but I was wrong. In a country that feels the need to brag about its freedom, perhaps out of some great insecurity, gay people are still treated like second-class citizens or worse. America has no lock on hypocrisy—it happens all over the world—but that doesn’t make it any easier to live with.

So President Obama sees the light and says his administration will no longer defend DOMA in court. Being happy about that would be like rejoicing that doctors are no longer applying leeches to patient’s faces when they complain of nasal congestion. It’s not a bad thing, though, and about damn time.

In to save the day, to keep those damn gays in their place, is House Speaker John Boehner, who will put himself and his sterling reputation on the line to stand against the president, his insurgent gay terrorist pals, and their dreams of marriage and equal protection under the law. That’s a relief. When things threaten to become too constitutional, thankfully, there’s someone like John Boehner, owner of every third tear cried in America, to step in and attempt to push America back into the good old days of darkness. Rather than shoulder the awesome burden of creating some damned jobs in America, he goes for the easy cheap shot of going after gay Americans. Again.

Of course same sex marriage is constitutional! The right to be yourself, to pursue life, liberty, and property, is protected several ways over several amendments. John Boehner should know this. If only he read the Constitution as often as some of us do, he wouldn’t have bothered to lower himself to this time-wasting, pathetic attempt to invigorate his base of supporters.

Damn, congressman, we’re trying to get up the road here. Either lay out a plan for job creation for all of us to see or get out of the way. You are the Speaker of the House. Scratching around in the ancient dirt of repellent prejudice instead of tackling the real issues is amateur hour. You have a plan? Now’s the time.
