The last couple of Saturdays we've been having Lunch at Elmo on 8th Avenue where there is a lively afternoon bar crowd singing along to a great '80's soundtrack.
The music has prompted lots of discussions about where and when we were when the songs came out, my friend's experience of being a little kid or teenager and seeing these videos on MTV and me, of course, pontificating on the importance of Dexy's Midnight Runners or Gary Numan.
It's amazing, this connecting thread of music, a history that we personalize. Is pop music the most important thing in the world? Yes and no...it really isn't. It's just that for me , and many others, it's the reference point for the events that have shaped who I am. Quite possibly I've learned more from the lyrics of David Bowie, than from any of my professors at Columbia.
Thanks to everybody who came out last night on such short notice..The event was really great and afterwards we went out to one of my new favorite Vietnamese restaurants....An Choi, 85 Orchard St, New York ...the two brothers that run this place are truly awesome and the waitress is so sweet and helpful...we have been there 3 times since they opened a little less than a month ago and loved it every time!

Richard Phillips' new paintings looked great at Gagosian uptown (INFO HERE), and since Richard's paintings decorate the apartment of the Bass/Vanderwoodson clan on TV's "Gossip Girl", and Richard himself appeared as a guest on one of the GG episodes it was no surprise that Ed Westwick (Chuck on Gossip Girl ) made an appearance and graciously posed for a fan snap!
I just read the Obit of artist Ernest Trova and was able to track down the "Falling Man" sculpture that the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis owns. I used to love this when I was a little kid, it helped foster the idea in me that artists are like no other kinds of people and not mere mortals like I was..
