Small Paintings with Small Pricetags

Thanks everybody for your support and good wishes. It really means a lot to me! Honestly I gotta say I am blown away by the response I've gotten, problem solved! ...THANK YOU!

Email Out

...I wasn't getting email in my main mailbox for the past week. I just thought it was a little glitch or something that would be fixed on it's own and the thought of calling verizon to report this terrified me. Any call to Verizon means an hour, minimum, for starters and I wasn't sure I was ready for that rabbit hole. So I was out Sunday evening and trying to exchange email address' and learned that emails to me at my main account were getting bounced so I knew I had to do something. Monday morning I called and after two hours on the phone with various technicians and supervisors someone suggested checking to see if I was near the storage limit on the verizon server.....I was, I deleted and now all is well. But if you sent me an email in the last week, it might not have reached me, could you please resend? Thanks

Friends

I ran into my friend Mark Kane today at lunch and we ended up chatting for close to an hour. He's such a smart funny handsome guy with a great outlook on life. I hope I can be like him when I grow up.

Words of Wisdom

I want to find a man, who calls you beautiful instead of hot.
Who calls you back when you hang up on him.
Who will stay awake just to watch you sleep.
Who wants to show you off to the world when you are in your sweats.
Who holds your hand in front of his friends.
Wait for the one who is constantly reminding you of how much he cares about you
and how lucky he is to have you. Wait for the one who turns to his friends and says....that's him.

Lady Gaga

there's a terrific piece by Holly Brubach in todays's NYT about lady gaga's awkwardness, which I take to mean as her vulnerability. She seems very human to me and I like that. You can read Holly's piece ...here

Sigmar Polke RIP

One of my favorite artists passed away on Thursday. Sigmar polke was grouped in with a number of different movements , but always stood out as a unique figure. When I was a little kid and looking through books about pop art, his images would sometimes appear, but I found them really confusing as they were not like other kinds of pop art that I was familiar with.

Roberta Smith had this to say about him in the obit she wrote for the NY Times...

....his main achievement was to be an early and astute adopter of American Pop Art, belying its crisp, consumerist optimism with tawdry materials that added social bite, and with random splashes of paint that implied disorder and the unconscious. His paintings were essentially Conceptual in their skepticism about the very act of painting.

.....I couldnt have said it better myself.

Polke was proficient in many different mediums, but I am particularly partial to his drawings. the crazy juxtopositions and the way a drawing could turn from representational to abstract and back again, this reflexive quality I find really compelling. I never tire of looking at his work. The catalog for the MoMA exhibit of his drawings in 1999 is highly recommended.

Eyes Wide Open

I've been going around lately with my eyes really engaging with others, looking people in the eye, even strangers. I think it's come about for a number of reasons, one is that I'm knocking on a lot of doors as a census enumerator and the other is just feeling a certain kinship with everyone, not feeling so alone and seperate. It's really nice and people look back and smile, maybe they just like my glasses or something but it's a cool stage to be in!

The Examined Life

Well it looks like a dramatic winter/spring is coming to an end and things are lightening up with summer here. I've been trying to expand my mind, wrap it around bigger, odder concepts like questioning why I take for granted that the people I am close to are gonna have similar approaches and responses to mine. I know I'm someone who likes to examine my life, my motivations and goals, I want to be able to answer the question "why" if somebody asks me about my actions, but a lot of the people I am close to, would really rather not examine themselves in this way and that's perfectly aceeptable.

Maybe this comes from my studio practice where visitors frequently ask me "why"? Why did you use shiny paint , why is it so large, why is that part so drippy, why are the lines so rough .....etc etc etc.

This kind of thinking happens outside of the studio too, so if you ask me why I got mad when someone blew me off I can probably tell you that it has to do with some insecurity I've had since I was a kid and my divorced dad wouldn't show up to take me to dinner or something like that. I don't think it's better to be this way, to be able to explain what my motivations are, it just is the way I am. In fact I rarely think one way of anything is better than the other and I hope I don't think of myself as "Superior" in some way. My screen name came about from a love of my local skateboard shop "Supreme" and a belief that we are all supreme, we are all children of god and therefore all equal. I guess one thing that happens to gay folks, like myself , is that we realize we are different from the norm, that there IS a norm and that all of it must be questioned and that some things about ourselves we can't change (our sexuality, our race, our sex....etc) and some things we can (Our outlook, our habits, they way we treat others, etc). I feel very special in this regard, to have this kind of insight that so many things are choices, like choosing to be happy or miserable. I still have a lot more wisdom to be gained in this regard and for me, that's a big part of what makes life worth living...
